Work is expected to begin next spring on a renovation and addition at the Wesselman Nature Center in Wesselman Woods with completion set for early 2011.
A contract with Hafer Associates was approved Wednesday by the city’s Board of Park Commissioners.
City officials say the center is out of date and too small, limiting the programs and services it can provide to area residents.
The city will spend up to $850,000 of riverboat money from the 2009 budget. This is part of an agreement the city made with the Wesselman Nature Society to manage and operate Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve (which includes the nature center and recycling center) and Howell Wetlands.
Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel said the renovation will enhance the visitor experience. Plans include improved classroom, exhibit and office space; restrooms that are more accessible; new wall, ceiling and floor finishes; new windows and doors; siding and trim improvements and upgrades of the mechanical and electrical systems.
Hafer also aims for the independently-verified LEED certification, which in addition to lowering operating costs reduces waste sent to landfills, conserves energy and water, reduces harmful greenhouse gas emissions and demonstrates a commitment to environmental stewardship.
The nature center will remain open during the work.
